Team Australia have taken the driver seat after securing a massive 400+ runs lead in the ongoing Boxing Day Test against New Zealand at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Meanwhile, the ongoing Test has come under the scanner for poor umpiring and one of those left former Aussie skipper Ricky Ponting furious.

Tim Paine recently vented his frustration over the DRS technology’s verdict for his own wicket on the second day’s play. And now, he had to see Mitchell Santner being given not out on Day 3 in what seemed like an obvious wicket. The Kiwi batsman was hit on the strap of the glove before being caught by the fielder. On-field umpire Marias Erasmus refused to raise his finger despite a strong appeal from the fielders.

The Aussie skipper decided to go for the review. Although the replay showed that the delivery from the Mitchell Starc had hit the gloves of Santner, but Aleem Dar chose to stay with the on-field decision after failing to find any conclusive evidence.

Ricky Ponting furious with poor umpiring

Meanwhile, the decision left former skipper Ricky Ponting fuming and he vented his frustration on the umpire. He suggested that it was 100 percent out and if the third umpire can’t get it right then, he shouldn’t be umpiring at all.

“That has been missed by the third umpire, absolutely as plain as day … if you can’t get that right, then you shouldn’t be doing it”, Ponting said on Channel 7. “(The sweatband) clearly moves before it goes into the forearm guard. That, in my opinion, is conclusive evidence. (Out), 100 per cent. We could all see that clearly. The sweatband was definitely moving on the glove.

That has been missed by the third umpire. Absolutely as plain as day… If he (Dar) can’t get that right, then he shouldn’t be doing it. Looking at the right things there, that’s a very, very obvious decision to make … That, in my opinion, is conclusive evidence to overturn the on-field decision,” Ponting added.

With hours to go before the end of the day three, Australia lead by 434 runs in the second innings with Matthew Wade and Travis Head batting. New Zealand will hope to bowl out as early as possible and then try and chase down the target to level the series.
