The Indian team had some unfinished business from their first game in Chennai against the West Indies. The resounding loss in the opening One-Dayer to the men in maroon provoked the home side to come out firing from all cylinders as they set a daunting target of 388 for the tourists. Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul set the tone with their double-century stand post which Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant provided the perfect finish to the innings.

On a flat wicket after losing the toss, the Indian opening batsmen latched on to the opposition bowling attack. The top-order batters couldn’t do the same in the first ODI as the tourists chased down 288 with ease in Chennai. The men in blue lost their first wicket in the 37th over in the form of KL Rahul for 102 while Rohit Sharma was dismissed in the 44th over for 292, leaving them three down. Rishabh Pant came out to bat at number five and threaded a breezy partnership of 73 off just 25 balls along with Shreyas Iyer.

The wicketkeeper-batsman who scored 71 in the previous game, picked up from where he left. He went on about his business by hammering Alzarri Joseph for two maximums right after Rohit’s dismissal in the 45th over before launching a complete onslaught of 24 runs in the 46th over off Sheldon Cottrell. The 47th over almost tilted the scales in India’s over.

Roston Chase concedes the most expensive over of the innings:

All-rounder Roston Chase had only given 16 off his four overs before bowling the 47th over. However, it all changed in front of Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant. The first ball went as a no-ball to Pant before the southpaw could manage only a single off the free hit. Shreyas Iyer took on Chase since the second ball and ruthlessly smashed him for four sixes and a boundary to make it 31 off an over.

It became most runs off an over for India in the history of One-day internationals. The 48th and the 49th over saw Pant and Iyer getting dismissed for 39 off 16 and 53 off 32 respectively. West Indies skipper admitted that they conceded too many runs in the death overs, with the last five overs going for 90 runs. The tourists lost the game by 107 runs.
