Contrary to the popular expectations, Steve Smith and David Warner did not face a hostile reception at the Wanderers during the first T20I against South Africa in what was their first game in the African country since the 2018 ball-tampering scandal.

A few fans did bring some signs to re-open old wounds but overall, nothing noticeable took place. But Steve Smith still managed to attract boos from the crowd at one point thanks to his actions while he was batting. Steve Smith hit a dead ball from Dale Steyn for a four and the local crowd did not like it at all.

The incident took place after the fourth ball of the third over in Australia’s innings.  Looking to cash in on any mistakes made by Dale Steyn, Steve Smith smashed a ball over mid-on that he had to charge to reach on the second bounce. The former Australia captain managed to send the ball over the fence only to see the umpire call it a dead ball as Steyn was adjudged to have released the ball unintentionally.

The South Africa pacer had clipped the side of his head midway through his bowling action and subsequently released the ball. Smith, on his part, was baffled to see the call from the umpire while the crowd did not take long to boo him for his actions.

Here is a clip of that incident:

Meanwhile, Australia thrashed South Africa by 107 runs to take the lead in the three-match series. Asked to bat first, the visitors scored 196 for 6 in their allotted 20 overs. In reply, South Africa were all out for just 89 with left-arm spinner Ashton Agar taking a career-best 5 for 24 including a hat-trick. Agar became the second Australian after Brett Lee to take a hat-trick in T20Is.
