Why should players have all the fun on a cricket field and exactly that is what umpire Greg Davidson proved during the game between Melbourne Renegades and Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League. The match official came up with an amusing gesture towards the end of the game that left almost everyone in stitches.

Greg Davidson had seemingly given Renegades batsman Beau Webster out before he hilariously changed his mind at the last moment and ended up scratching his nose instead. The incident occurred on the third ball of the 17th over, bowled by Rashid Khan. The Afghanistan spinner bamboozled Webster with a googly and it looked the batsman was out when the ball hit him on the pads.

And perhaps Davidson thought the same too as he raised his finger to shoulder height before changing his mind and scratching his nose instead.

“Not out, I didn’t give it out,” Greg Davidson was heard saying on the stump mic, repeating his face-touching motion to show he had a case of itchy nose. He also tapped his hands together to indicate that there was an inside edge which made him give the decision in the batsman’s favour. Adelaide Strikers star Cameron White, who was mic’ed up, also praised the umpire for the correct decision.

“Good decision, that was the right decision,” White said as quoted by Wisden. “It’s a good decision if he changes it. All we want is the right outcome. I’d much prefer that than the wrong decision. I think he obviously initially thought it was out and then realised that he did get an inside edge on it.”

Here is a clip of that incident:

Meanwhile, Adelaide Strikers beat the Renegades by 18 runs to register their third win on the trot and continue their winning start to the season. After scoring 155 for 6, the Strikers managed to restrict the Renegades for 137 for 8.
