Former India skipper Kapil Dev, who is the head of the three-member Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) which will appoint the next head coach, has stated that skipper Virat Kohli’s opinion will be crucial in the appointment of new coach. Current coach Ravi Shastri‘s tenure will end at the end of the series against West Indies.

Given the good rapport between Kohli and Shastri, speculations are rife that Shastri might get another term as head coach. Quite a number of quarters have said that the applicants who have applied for the post should not expect much. However, reports have also suggested that Kohli’s opinion would not make much of a difference in the selection process.

But Kapil Dev has made things clear that the committee would seek inputs from Kohli before appointing the next India coach. Kohli’s opinion had played a major role when Shastri became the head coach a couple of years ago. And if the committee gives priority to Kohli’s opinion once again then it wouldn’t be surprising if Shastri becomes the head coach again.

“That’s his (Kohli) opinion we have to respect everybody’s opinion,” Kapil Dev told reporters.

Before leaving for the West Indies tour, Kohli made it clear that he and Shastri share a great camaraderie. Kohli backed Shastri to continue till the 2020 World T20I. The other members of the CAC are Anushuman Gaekwad and Shantha Rangaswamy.

Shastri, meanwhile, has had a good stint with Team India. Under him, India won Test series in Australia and ODI series in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. India have also remained on top of the Test rankings for months now in addition to winning the Asia Cup last year. In the recently-concluded World Cup, the Men in Blue made it to the semifinal.
