Before the start of 2017/18 Ranji Trophy season, no one would have given Delhi team even an inch of a chance to qualify for the finals. The prime reasons for this thinking were the re-appointment of KP Bhaskar as the Head Coach, transfer of captaincy away from Gautam Gambhir and handing over the captaincy to young Rishab Pant when Ishant Sharma left the side due to the international commitments.

Overcoming from the all the odds which came in Delhi’s way, the Rishab Pant led side came so long, defeating a star-studded Bengal in the semifinal of the tournament.

Both (Delhi and Vidarbha) the teams were underdogs but have made it to the final. While Vidarbha have qualified for the final for the first time in the history, Delhi have come to this stage after a brief period of 10 years.

Delhi skipper, Rishab Pant, ahead of the final revealed the reason behind team’s success,

“We just keep things simple. We don’t complicate things and take the unnecessary pressure. Another important factor is that we back each other. That is working out for the team, I guess. Because backing each other is the biggest thing in cricket. Everyone is happy for each other, and that makes our team more powerful,” he told Sportstar.

Captaincy fell on the shoulders of young Rishab Pant after Ishant’s departure, even when he wasn’t the Vice-captain of the side before the start of the season. On being asked whether he had any pressure on him with likes of Gautam Gambhir in the side, he said,

“I have played for Delhi in the past, so everyone knows me. They know how I deal with situations. Gautam bhaiya is always there to support me. He always tells me that ‘you take your decision and I will back you’. If I need any suggestion, I make it a point to consult with him.”

The final of the 83rd edition of the Ranji Trophy will be played at the Holkar stadium in Indore from December 29 to January 2.

The success of Delhi with heavily depend on Gautam Gambhir, Nitish Rana, Manan Sharma, Navdeep Saini and Kulwant Khejroliya.

Talking of Vidarbha, if seniors like Wasim Jaffer, Faiz Fazal, Ganesh Sathish click for their side, then it will be a long work out for Delhi bowlers in the field. Vidarbha team is already coming with a fresh win over heavyweight Karnataka in the semifinal of the tournament and would look to go past Delhi as well.
