The first Test of the two-match series between India and West Indies at Antigua saw the host succumbed to pressure suffering a 318-run defeat. They would relish the chance of holding the visitors for a draw, but for that to happen, the batters need to step up and do the scoring. India; on the other hand, will eye a clean sweep to make a thumping start to the ICC World Test Championship.

India produced a clean effort with both batsmen and bowlers chipping with contributions to pave the way for the win. Virat Kohli & Co took a crucial 75-run lead in the first innings, thanks to Ishant Sharma’s five-wicket haul after Ajinkya Rahane’s 81-run knock helped them post 297 runs. Rahane once again led the batting unit in the second essay with a century and contributions from skipper Kohli and Hanuma Vihari to set up a target of 419 runs. It was then upto Jasprit Bumrah who with a five-wicket haul reduced West Indies to 50 for nine before Mohammed Shami cleaned things up to secure a 318-run victory.

Jason Holder & Co will have a tough job at their hand to come back from their defeat. The batters have hurt them with poor outings in recent times, and the Antigua Test was no different. West Indies need to work on their batting front and put runs on the scoreboard if they want to give themselves any chance of coming back. The batting has undone a lot of the good work of a resurgent pace unit and been responsible for some inexplicable defeats.

India will be high on confidence after securing their biggest overseas win in terms of runs. The form of Ajinkya Rahane, who scored 183 runs in the last match along with Hanuma Vihari in the middle-order will keep Virat Kohli & Co in high stead. Besides, they have arguably their most balanced Test attack of all time which will give them the edge for another whitewash.

Weather and Pitch Condition

The weather in Jamaica looks to be clean and excellent for a five-day Test match. The temperature will be hovering around 30 degree Celsius with a negligible chance of rain on the first day of the Test match between West Indies and India.

The average first-innings score at Sabina Park in the five most recent games has been around 350. But the wicket will become slow and start to take turn as it wears down.

Match Prediction

West Indies have come a long way since their world-class team in the 1970-80s. They have struggled to produce another Viv Richards or a Courtney Walsh and thus, found themselves in the eighth spot above Bangladesh and Zimbabwe in the Test Rankings.

Although they hold an edge over India in the overall Test matches, the visitors will have a clear chance of registering a whitewash when they go up against each other in the second match in Jamaica starting from August 30 (Friday).
