Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell seems to be on the path of becoming controversy’s favourite child. Of late, the hard-hitting batsman has been hogging the limelight for all the wrong reasons. Earlier this year, he was all over the news after his name was sensationally involved in match-fixing. He was accused of spot-fixing during the 2017 Ranchi Test in India. Maxwell recently insisted that his name was wrongly involved in the scandal. He had also said that he always made sure to talk to Anti-Corruptions Officials of the Indian Premier League (IPL) whenever he saw anything alarming.

But amidst all this, he refrained from speaking on one matter. The incident had almost put his life in danger during the 2017 edition of the IPL.

According to Mumbai Mirror, the incident had taken place on the eve of the match between Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) and Gujarat Lions (GL).

The former Kings XI player had left the team unknowingly without informing anyone. In fact, he had also not told about his outing to the Kings XI team manager, local liaison officer and the integrity officer.

The all-rounder had reportedly left the hotel for a party. The party was hosted by the promoters of Lions at a resort far away from the team hotel.

Australia got drunk. He was in such a condition that he could not even walk properly let along returning to the hotel alone.

However, he still decided to return to the hotel on his own. For that purpose, he chose to cycle his way back to the team hotel during the late hours of the night.

The awaiting calamity struck as he was on his way to the hotel. During his ride, a drunk Maxwell fell off the bicycle. He could have been easily run over by speeding vehicles. But fortunately, a passerby came to his rescue.

After recognising the Australia star Glenn Maxwell, the individual helped the 29-year-old reach the team hotel safely during the tenth edition of IPL.

“We chose not to make the incident public because it could have led to a lot of controversies. So we don’t know what kind of information he had given to the ACU. On this occasion, Maxwell did not even inform his team manager, leave aside the integrity officer or security staff. Ideally, he should not have gone out because it was a security risk. If he still had to go, he should have gone with the security cover. But Maxwell chose to go alone, and come back alone in an inebriated state,” a close BCCI source revealed.
