While several youngsters caught the eye in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 auction on Thursday, the leg-spinner Pravin Tambe proved the saying ‘age is just a number’. At 48, Tambe became the oldest player to be bought in an IPL auction when he was snapped up by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for his base price of Rs 20 lakh.

If he is given a game by the franchise, Tambe will become the oldest player to play in the IPL. That record is currently held by Australian spinner Brad Hogg, who played for KKR at the age of 44. Pravin Tambe came up through the Kanga League ranks, and his IPL debut had happened before first-class cricket.

I will bring all my experience to KKR – Pravin Tambe

He turned out for Rajasthan Royals for three seasons before the franchise was suspended for two years. In 2016, he was part of now-defunct Gujarat Lions. Pravin Tambe also picked a hat-trick, which came against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2014 IPL when he was playing for Rajasthan Royals.

“I am still a 20-year-old in my mind,” Tambe, who has an 18-year-old son, was quoted as saying by PTI. “I will bring all my experience and energy to the team. I know that I can bring that even if I’m with them not playing.”

“People say many things but I keep doing my job and put in a lot of hard work. I will like to do well in whatever role given to me, be it in fielding or bowling. It’s not to prove anything. If that was the case, I could not have played for this long. I’m really excited to play for them,” he added.

Not only the purchase of Pravin Tambe but also Kolkata Knight Riders ringed in quite a few surprises. They made the costliest purchase of the IPL 2020 auction when they snapped Pat Cummins for a huge price of INR 15.50 Crores. They also bought the young Varun Chakravarthy.

I just love what I script. Over the years, Cricket has been my passion and crisping articles on it gives me an immense pleasure...Cheers...!!!
