MSK opens up about MSD’s future

The reports began surfacing about MS Dhoni calling quits ahead of the 2019 World Cup when he got dropped for the Windies and Australia T20Is squad in 2018. Perhaps it was for the first time in his career that Dhoni didn’t get picked for a series despite being thoroughly fit. Not only this, the addition of Rishabh Pant as a wicketkeeper-batsman made the case more curious.

Meanwhile, MSK Prasad broke his silence on what happened and why did the selection committee overlook MSD for six T20Is. The chief selector said everything was preplanned, and they had spoken to MS Dhoni and the team management before making the call public. MSK Prasad added the selection committee wanted to identify the second wicket-keeper batsman; thus they gave a chance to Pant and DK for six T20Is.

“He definitely was not dropped. I personally spoke to Dhoni and team management. I told them we needed to identify the second wicketkeeper for the World Cup. So we wanted to give some game time to both Karthik and Rishabh, and that is why they played those six T20Is,” the chief selector said.

In his absence, Pant and Karthik did fare well; helping India win a game in Australia. However, Dhoni getting dropped was a blessing in disguise for him. As he struggled to hit a single fifty in ODIs in 2018, the former India skipper hit three consecutive half-centuries in Australia ODIs. Courtesy his two unbeaten fifties, India won the matches and thus the series 2-1. Also, Dhoni finished the tour with an average of staggering 193.

What future hold for MS Dhoni?

MS Dhoni is a sure starter in the lineup for the mega event in England and Wales; even MSK Prasad said so. But the story doesn’t end here. When asked about will Dhoni continue playing for India after the 2019 World Cup, here is what MSK Prasad said,

“We have definitely not discussed this. Because prior to such a big tournament, I do not think it is wise to get distracted, since all energies are geared towards preparing well for the World Cup.” MSK concluded.

Meanwhile, Dhoni will be playing the forthcoming Australia series, which begins on February 24th in Vizag.
