England, on Wednesday, during the first ODI against the Windies, chased their highest total in One-Dayers (360) in Barbados with six wickets. The credit for a magnificent result for England goes to their opener, Jason Roy and Test captain, Joe Root. The pair scored respective centuries to help the visitors take an early lead in the five-match series. Meanwhile, captain, Eoin Morgan shared high praises for the Surrey batsman, who looked utterly efficient in his approach during the game. Gaining boost from the win, Morgan added the team could chase big totals in ODIs.

Gayle storm hit the Poms hard in the 1st innings

It was Chris Gayle who hogged all the limelight in his returning game. The veteran smashed his 24th ODI hundred (135 off 129 balls), hitting 12 sixes and three fours. Though he didn’t begin well, giving respect to the new ball; Gayle started the onslaught once the spinners got introduced to the attack. It was about time when he whacked every England bowler out of the park. Later, handy contributions from Shai Hope and Darren Bravo helped the Windies rack up 360 for eight on the board.

England, in their chase, was upto the mark – scoring boundaries and hitting sixes off bad deliveries. Jonny Bairstow along with Roy stitched 91 for the first wicket in ten overs before he edged one off Holder. With Root and Roy at the crease, the English team could give directions to their inning – thus helping him come close to the target with each passing over.

“We spoke at the halfway stage about the fact we have been in this situation before and we do believe we can chase big totals,” Morgan said after England won the first ODI in Barbados.

Shedding light on the pace of the innings and the batting firepower to follow in the lineup, Morgan added,

“We bat very deep. The manner we started in set the tone of the innings. Jason and Jonny were outstanding. At no stage did we feel we were under pressure to up the rate.”

Eoin lauds ‘superb’ Roy

Eoin Morgan, who scored 65 off 51 balls – hitting four boundaries and three sixes lauded Jason Roy. The southpaw said for Roy to play such attacking cricket sets up the chase for the England team.

“For Jason to go on and play such a commanding innings really sets up a big run chase. It’s amazing the way he plays. It’s brilliant. People will forget Joe Root scored a hundred there, he made it look very easy, but we’re so fortunate to have a guy like that who can be our rock. And he’s no slouch.” Eoin Morgan concluded.

Meanwhile, England and Windies will face off in the second ODI at the same venue on Friday (February 22nd).
