One of the most elegant batsmen of the modern era KL Rahul is celebrating his 28th birthday. Born on April 18th, 1992, the Karnataka batsman made his debut for the Indian cricket team during the 2014-15 tour of Australia in the iconic Boxing day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Rahul did not have the best of the debut but the Karnataka opener made amends for it in the very next game at the SCG. The 28-year-old stroked a brilliant hundred in his first essay as a Test match opener and immediately asserted his credentials as the next big thing in Indian cricket.

Rahul had to wait for two more years for his ODI debut and the right-hander ensured that he made the most of the opportunity as he became the first batsman in the history of Indian cricket to score and hundred in his very first ODI game. But with Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma ruling the roost as white-ball openers, Rahul’s ODI career was a stop-start one until the 2019 World Cup where he got the opportunity to open the innings after an injury to Shikhar Dhawan ruled him out of the competition.

As far as T20I cricket is concerned, Rahul has been one of India’s best batsman since his debut. He is one of three Indian batters to score a hundred in each of the three formats of the game, a feat he achieved in a T20I against West Indies in 2016.

Rahul was at the peak of his powers in 2018 but tumultuous Test tours of England and Australia followed by the controversy that ensued post his participation in a chat show alongside Hardik Pandya proceeded to threaten his career to rock bottom.

Rahul was dropped from the Test squad after the tour of West Indies, but the right-hander proceeded to discover his form following a brilliant stint in domestic cricket for Karnataka.

Rahul, who has also become India’s first-choice keeper in white-ball cricket was in stupendous form in the recent tour of New Zealand, scored 221 runs in five-match T20I series and followed it up 204 runs in the three-match ODI series.
