Hailing the World Cup as “the pinnacle” of the one-day game, Australia pace spearhead Mitchell Starc has said the upcoming edition is going to be a ‘great tournament’. Starc was on fire when Australia won the World Cup at home four years ago. The left-arm pacer was breathing fire as he terrorised the opposition with his sheer pace and swing.  Starc deservedly bagged the Man of the Tournament award.

He took at least two wickets in each of Australia’s fixtures, and only conceded more than five an over once. His best performance came in the thrilling loss to New Zealand when his heroic 6-28 almost inspired his side to defend 151. And as Australia gear up to defend their World Cup title, Starc has set his sight on the tournament.

“In the one-day game, it’s the pinnacle, the World Cup. No matter where it is, or who’s playing. It’s the pinnacle of the game in one-day cricket,” Mitchell Starc was quoted as saying by the ICC.

“It’s going to be a great tournament,” he added . “It’s at tournament play where it shows how good a team is. You want to be playing your best cricket at the end. You want to make the finals first, but you want to keep your best cricket for the end. It’s a bit different than playing the same team in a few games [of a] series.”

Australia have found some form just ahead of the World Cup. After not winning a single ODI series in 2018, they beat India and Pakistan this year to prove their World Cup credentials. The defending champions have a formidable pace attack and they can very much defend their title. Starc is a part of the attack that boasts the likes of Pat Cummins, Jason Behrendorff, Jhye Richardson and Nathan Coulter-Nile. And the one-time World Cup winner is confident Australia have the ability to beat England in England and even go on to win the succeeding Ashes.

“If we can beat England in England, win a World cup in England, and then win the Ashes in England, there is not too much that an Englishman or woman can say to knock you down,” said Starc.

The World Cup will get underway on May 30 while Australia will open their account against Afghanistan on June 1.
