World Cup-Winning Coach Trevor Bayliss Joins IPL Franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad As Head Coach

IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad has made a big change to its support staff as the one-time champions have named Trevor Bayliss as their head coach for the upcoming season of IPL. He will be taking the job from Tom Moody, team’s long-time head coach.

The news comes as a big surprise as Bayliss was expected to take over as the job at Kolkata Knight Riders. In fact, the reports had also confirmed that he has already been appointed as the coach of the franchise.

Bayliss will be making his comeback to IPL after five years but will be coaching Sunrisers Hyderabad. Coaching positions at KKR were opened after the franchise parted ways with Jacques Kallis and Simon Katich.

Under Moody, SRH’s previous head coach, the team did well as they clinched the IPL trophy for the first time in 2016. They also qualified for the final of IPL 2018 and SRH was one of the four teams in playoffs in this year’s IPL. The decision to move ahead of Moody does come as a surprise.

Bayliss, in past, has been associated with IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders. He was at the helm from 2011 t 2014. During his stay as the coach, KKR won IPL trophies in 2012 and 2014. The team is yet to play an IPL final since then.

In 2015, Bayliss took up the job of chief coach of England cricket team and has been associated with them since then. Although his contract will expire after Ashes 2019 and the veteran coach had already confirmed that he will be not be renewing his contract once it gets over.

It is not known whether SRH have only moved on from Moody or some other changes are being made as well.

Ironically, Bayliss will team up with Kane Williamson, captain of SRH in IPL. On Sunday, England defeated Williamson-led New Zealand in the final of World Cup 2019. This also marked an end to England’s title drought as it was the first time that Three Lions clinched the elusive trophy.
