Ahead of the two-match Test series against India, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has criticised the points system used for the World Test Championship. New Zealand are currently languishing at the sixth spot in the points table with just 60 points from two series (five Tests). On the other hand, India are at the top of the table with an incredible 360 points from three series (seven Tests).

The number of matches in each series can vary between a minimum of two matches, to a maximum of five matches and the point for each game varies too. Each series counts for 120 points, distributed over the number of matches in a series.

For example, a two-match series will mean 60 points for each Test while a three-match series will give 40 points to each Test match. A tie will be 50% of the points available, whilst a draw will be a 3:1 points ratio. On the eve of the first Test against India, Kane Williamson said that while the Test Championship is a right step, the points system has ‘an element to it that isn’t fair’.

“It’s an interesting one. I guess there’s an element to it that isn’t fair. But I guess there is an effort in bringing context to Test cricket which wasn’t there. So I mean the World Test Championship is a step in the right direction.

“It’s not perfect but I guess after the first year or two of it, there’ll always be efforts to continue to make it a better product,” Kane Williamson said before stating that the points distribution system needs to have a relook.

“It is a step in the right direction but there are so many parts to it that some teams playing five, some teams playing two, the difference in countries, there is just heaps of different parts to it that don’t quite make the points of equal measure.

“But we have all signed up for it and we are all keen to see how it unfolds and I’m sure it’ll develop over time,” he added.
