It is fair to say that former Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria is one of the most successful spinners to have played for his country.

Post the retirement of Saqlain Mushtaq and Mushtaq Ahmed, the leg-spinner, who also happens to be only the second Hindu cricketer to have ever played for Pakistan, spearheaded his country’s bowling line-up for the better part of the first decade of the 21st century.

Kaneria has been quite vocal and has been bluntly putting his views on social media on a wide range of topics on social media. Recently, the leg-spinner took to his Twitter account to respond to his former captain Inzamam Ul Haq’s statement, who on his official Youtube channel had said that Kaneria was carted around the park by Brian Lara during a Test match, despite him putting fielders on the boundary line.

Responding to Inzamam’s statement, Kaneria said that he dismissed Lara five times in his career, and had the Pakistan Cricket Board supported him, he would have broken many more records.

“I have taken @BrianLara’s wicket 5 times in my career. He was a good cricketer. If PCB had supported me, I would have broken many big records.” Danish Kaneria said in response to PCB’s tweet on Inzamam Ul Haq’s video.

Inzamam Ul-Haq, during his tribute video to Brian Lara, had recounted an incident where he had said-

“Kaneria bowled a googly and Lara hit the ball back towards the bowler, coming out of his crease. Danish said ‘well played Brian’, which prompted Lara to say ‘okay sir’. The next three balls were all dispatched over the boundary,”

Inzamam added:”I was the captain of the side so I went over to Danish and told him to tease Lara a bit more. I felt he was angry so we might make him throw away his wicket. I placed the fielders on the boundary in anticipation of big shots but he still managed to outfox us by hitting Danish to all parts of the ground.”

Kaneria’s last few years of his career may have been marred with spot-fixing in county cricket, but he did have a hugely successful career for Pakistan. The leg-spinner claimed 261 wickets in 61 Tests- the most by an Pakistan spinner in their cricketing history, and 25 more than the legendary Late Abdul Qadir.
