Former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar has criticised Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) decision to appoint Younis Khan as the batting coach for England tour. The role of batting coach is Younis Khan’s first appointment with the PCB since his retirement in 2017.

The board was earlier interested in roping him in to work at the development level at the National Cricket Academy but it did not materialise. Younis Khan is one of Pakistan’s most decorated batsmen. The PCB was also planning to involve Younis Khan in the country’s Under-19 coaching set-up but that did not work out either.

But in June, PCB finally managed to rope in Younis Khan for the upcoming series in England. And as the batting great gears up for the challenging series in England, Shoaib Akhtar has criticised the appointment. The outspoken former bowler said that instead of coaching Pakistan’s senior team, Younis Khan should have been working at the NCA.

“Younis Khan has wrongly been made batting coach, he should be training players in the National Academy with Mohammad Yousuf as the Pakistan batting coach,” Akhtar was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan.

The former bowler also said that PCB is not managed well. He also expressed his desire of working for the cricket board while also stating that he would work for free.

“PCB is mismanaged. The more you keep good people away, the further cricket will go downhill. If I got a chance to work in PCB, I’d bring in foreign investment. I would work for free and ensure that no one calls me up and tells me to select their kid,” he said.

Well, only time will tell how Younis Khan fares as a batting coach but not many would doubt his credentials. In a career spanning over 17 years, he piled up 10,099 runs at an average of 52 in 118 Tests and is the only batsman with the distinction of making Test hundreds in 11 countries.

He scored 10,099 runs in Tests and is the only Pakistani to cross the 10,000-run mark in Tests. He also has a stunning record in England where he scored 810 runs at an average of 50.62 from nine Tests.
