Former Indian legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar turned 69 today and the cricketing fraternity poured in with wishes for one of the greatest ever Indian batsmen. Out of favour Indian batsman, Yuvraj Singh took to his twitter handle and wished the Little Master in a warm manner. “Wishing the first little master a very happy bday. God bless Sunny Bhai #HappyBirthdaySunilGavaskar.”

Gavaskar is regarded as one of the greatest batsmen to have graced the game. He took the world by storm when he smashed 774 runs in his debut Test series against a mighty West Indies. The team had the likes of some great fast bowlers who had the ability to destroy any star-studded batting up on their day. To score more than 70 runs in his debut Test series proved that he was a man from a different planet.

Gavaskar was the idol of several cricketers of the 90’s. It was Sachin Tendulkar who hero-worshipped Gavaskar as a child and wanted to emulate his feats. Gavaskar also gifted him two light weighted leg guards when he was impressed with his batting in the Ranji Trophy. Tendulkar went on to play his maiden Test series against England with his leg guards.

He broke the record of Gavaskar’s most test centuries in 2005 when he smashed his way to a memorable century against Sri Lanka in the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium. Gavaskar was the first to reach 10,000 Test runs. He had an uncanny ability to play some stupendous innings against some of the very best bowlers and on severely testing occasions.

Gavaskar is an iconic face in world cricket

There was several other cricketers apart from Yuvraj who wished Gavaskar. He is an iconic figure in cricket and his contributions will be etched in golden letters till cricket is alive. He was also part of the 1983 World Cup winning Indian team. Gavaskar was also part of the winning team in the World Championship series two years later.
