Yuzvendra Chahal was a chess player before taking to cricket. RCB head coach Simon Katich believes that he is using the tactical knowledge from chess into the field of cricket. Chahal was brilliant for RCB with his run in the IPL 2020. Though RCB failed to reach the final, the side was benefited with his performance.

Chahal has bowled some match-winning spell in the IPL 2020. He was the key in the slow pitches in UAE which continue to wear out. The leg spinner has been an integral part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore squad. He has performed in the IPL in India and has also weaved his magic in UAE.

Yuzvendra Chahal is a smart player: Mike Hesson

“I think the way he reads the game, he is a very smart player, everyone knows he is a chess player. He takes that knowledge and tactical thinking into his cricket. He knows when to attack the stumps, he knows when to bowl wide off the stumps when batters are looking to attack him

He understands his game and more importantly he is able to execute. This year, we certainly tried to use him as an attacking option, getting 21 wickets for a leg-spinner was very good,” said Hesson during a virtual press conference.

RCB entered the IPL playoffs for the first time in three years this season. But after their poor show in the eliminator against SRH, the Virat Kohli-led side was knocked out of the tournament, where they performed decently.

RCB has the record of reaching three finals. RCB entered the final match last time in 2016 but since then they have been at the bottom of the table. Moreover, in 2019, the franchise  finished last with just 5 wins from 14 matches.
