MS Dhoni might have been facing criticism for his slow knocks in recent times but there is little that not many lose hope when he remains on the field. Something similar was happening in this year’s World Cup when India took on New Zealand in the semifinal. The Men in Blue were the firm favourites to win the clash.

India had entered the game after topping the group stage while New Zealand were lucky to book their place in the last four. India’s chances of winning the game looked brighter when they restricted the Black Caps to a modest 239. But what happened thereafter was totally out of the script or anyone’s expectations.

New Zealand came all out guns blazing with the ball to blow away India’s top order. Inside three overs, India were reeling at 5 for 3 with Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli back in the hut. By the time MS Dhoni came to the crease at number seven, India were already five wickets down for 71.

The veteran wicketkeeper-batsman did revive India’s hopes along with Ravindra Jadeja but could not finish the game. He scored 50 and added 116 runs with Ravindra Jadeja who scored 77 but it was not enough to take the team over the line. India were eventually all out for 221. India’s hopes disappeared when Dhoni was run out in the 49th over of the game.

And it looks like not only the fans, the India cricketers had also pinned their hopes on the wicketkeeper-batsman. In a recent interview, ace spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has revealed how he nearly cried in the dressing room after seeing Dhoni getting run out.

“It was my 1st World Cup and when Mahi bhai (MS Dhoni) got out and I was going in (to bat), I was trying to hold back my tears. and it was so depressing, We played so well for 9 games but suddenly we were going out of the tournament. The rain wasn’t in our hands and so it won’t be right to say anything (about the interruption). It was the first time that we really wanted to go back to the hotel as soon as possible from the ground,” Chahal said at an event hosted by India Today.
