One of India’s leading run-scorer in the limited-overs format, Shikhar Dhawan is among the best left-handers in the modern-day game of cricket. Earlier this year, his place in the limited-overs side was questioned and after being denied a spot in all the games of the T20I series against England, Dhawan roared back with a scintillating ODI century against the Englishmen.

Such has been the aura of the Gabbar of Indian cricket that he appears to be the senior-most player of the ODI squad if the A-listers are absent and thus, the veteran can also be the captain of the side. In 139 ODI innings, Shikhar Dhawan has scored close to 6000 runs for the Indian Cricket Team and although he is in yesteryears, Dhawan is one of the best in the business.

Prithvi Shaw

Prithvi Shaw, the once in a generation of cricketers, is on his way to greatness at a very young age. Having led team India to the ICC Under 19 World Cup glory in 2018, Shaw has already made a mark on the world cricket map at just 21 years old. After having a horrendous outing in Australia, Shaw came up with blistering knocks in the Vijay Hazare Trophy this year.

Prithvi Shaw broke the record of the highest run-scorer this year in a single edition of the Vijay Hazare trophy as he smashed 827 runs in 8 innings with a jaw-dropping average of above 100. In IPL 2021, he continued from where he left off in the Vijay Hazare trophy and smashed Shivam Mavi for six 4s in an over in a match against Kolkata Knight Riders. It will not be wrong to say that Shaw could well be the next big thing in Indian cricket.

Suryakumar Yadav

When a legend of the game like Gautam Gambhir regrets not justifying the talent of the player, it just goes on to show the class of the star. Suryakumar Yadav is the one who makes Gambhir feel regretful for not utilizing him up to his complete potential. However, Suryakumar Yadav has now stamped his place in the Indian limited-overs side with his consistent runs in the IPL and in the Indian domestic circuit.

Yadav’s fearlessness and his skill of playing against spin are to look for. Cricketers all around the world have acknowledged his special ability and his stats have always backed the praise that he has received. Although he is yet to make his ODI debut for team India, it can surely be a possibility in the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka.

Touted as the future captain of the Indian Cricket Team, Shreyas Iyer has grown as a batsman manifold in the last couple of years. His form in the away tours of New Zealand and Australia in 2020 has now made him a permanent member of the Indian ODI side. Over the years, he has also matured in his batting style.

A perfect portrayal of it came against England in the recently-concluded T20I series. Iyer has a wide range and the power needed to clear the fence in limited-overs cricket. But what sets him apart from the rest is his temperament to play the situation. In the 20 innings he has played for India in ODI cricket, Iyer has scored 813 runs at an average of above 40. Being just 26 years old, Iyer has a decade of cricket left in him.

KL Rahul (wk)

KL Rahul has been the synonym of consistency in the Indian cricketing circuit in the last year or so. In 2020, he was the highest run-scorer for team India, breaking the jinx of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Shikhar Dhawan. He continued his great form in IPL 2020 and won the Orange Cap in the last edition.

This season in the IPL was no different for the Karnataka skipper as he was just second on the list in terms of the highest-run scorers in the IPL when the tournament came to a standstill. Rahul has shown a lot of promise in his batting in the last year and his 1509 runs in just 37 ODI innings at an average of 48.67 justify the potential he has got.

Manish Pandey

Manish Pandey is yet another batsman who has been out of favor from the Indian team in the last year or so due to the rising competition in the side, especially in the middle-order. Manish Pandey would have surely turned some heads around with his performances in IPL 2021 and his stats also suggest that he could be a very great player for team India if shown perseverance.

In the 21 ODI innings he has played so far for the Men in Blue, Manish has gone on to score 492 runs at an average of 35.14. He also has a century to his name and a couple of half-centuries as well for the Indian Cricket Team in the format. Manish can be a true asset in the second-string Indian ODI squad.

Hardik Pandya is among one of the most hard-hitting allrounders in the modern-day swashbuckling game of cricket. His contribution with both, the bat and the ball, is what makes him a special player for the country. His career has been marred with injuries but when he is at his prime, the world has seen how destructive he can be.

Carrying the tag of a game-changer, Hardik will have to maintain his fitness and he can be a regular face in the limited-overs side for the Men in Blue. Hardik has smashed 7 half-centuries in the 44 ODI innings he has played so far for the Indian Cricket Team.

An instant impact of his performance was seen in the ODI series against England this year when he made his ODI debut and smashed a scintillating half-century. In the Vijay Hazare Trophy this year, he was among the list of the highest run-scorers and it is a remarkable achievement considering his batting position.

Rishi Dhawan

Having already made his debut for the Men in Blue, Rishi Dhawan didn’t have a very spectacular run in the international cricketing circuit. In the 2 innings that he batted, he could only score 12 runs in ODI cricket. He could only pick a single wicket in the 3 innings that he bowled in his ODI career.

However, Rishi Dhawan made a scintillating comeback in the Indian domestic circuit this year. He was among the best all-rounders in the Vijay Hazare Trophy as he kept scoring runs on a consistent basis and picked wickets at regular intervals for his state team, Himachal. With injuries pounding Hardik Pandya, Rishi Dhawan could be a good fast-bowling all-rounder option for a second-string Indian team.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar

The biggest surprise when the BCCI announced the Indian squad for the ICC World Test Championship final and the Test series against England, was the exclusion of Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Bhuvneshwaar has been one of India’s prime fast bowlers and he could have surely made it into any three of the Indian squads but he is chosen in this squad because of his impact in ODI cricket.

The veteran Indian pacer made a mark for himself right in his debut game against Pakistan in 2012 as he ended with 3 wickets in his maiden ODI for India. Since then, Bhuvi hasn’t looked back in his career and has gone on to be India’s premier fast bowler in the last decade. In the 116 ODI innings, he has already picked 138 scalps and is among one of the most important players for team India in the first powerplay.

T Natarajan

T Natarajan was the find of Indian cricket in IPL 2020. After having had an exceptional outing for the SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) franchise in IPL 2020, Natarajan was immediately selected in the Indian team as a net bowler for the Australian tour. However, luck was kind on him as he got to make his debut in all three formats for team India in Australia.

After returning from Australia, his bowling has been marred with injuries. But there is absolutely no denying the fact that Natarajan’s toe-crushing yorkers in the death overs make him an exceptional talent. In the 2 ODI innings so far, Natarajan has already picked 3 wickets and could be a worthy addition to the Indian limited-overs squad in the years to follow.

Kuldeep Yadav

A one of a kind spinner from Uttar Pradesh, Kuldeep Yadav rose through the ranks of national cricket in a flash. The Chinaman formed a great partnership alongside Yuzvendra Chahal and has picked wickets on a consistent basis for the Men in Blue in the middle-overs. He has already picked 105 wickets in his limited ODI career of 61 innings which also include a couple of hat-tricks.

Over the last year, there has been a sharp decline in Kuldeep Yadav’s form. This has been the reason behind him spending most of his time warming the bench for the national cricket team. Once touted to be the best Indian spinner by the Head Coach himself, there is no doubt about Kuldeep’s talent. If he finds his rhythm one again, he can be a lethal weapon for the Men in Blue in the limited-overs format.

Prasidh Krishna is another promising talent from Karnataka who has seen a sharp rise in his professional cricketing career. The pacer has the ability to deliver really quick bowls and after impressing the selectors with his performance for the junior national team, Prasidh got the opportunity to represent the senior national team in the ODI series against England.

He made an instant impact in the series as he was able to pick 6 wickets in the 3 innings that he played against England. He also smashed the record of the best bowling figures by an Indian bowler in the debut ODI match as he ended the game with figures of 4/54 in just 8.1 overs.

Shardul Thakur is another fiery Indian cricketer who is always up for the task. A pure reflection of his talent was seen in the ODI and T20I series against England this year when he became the go-to bowler for skipper Virat Kohli whenever he needed a wicket in the middle-overs. Shardul Thakur never disappointed the skipper and ended as the highest wicket-taker for the Men in Blue.

His havoc with the bat against New Zealand away from home in 2020 is what makes him a special talent. In the 15 ODI innings so far, Shardul already has 22 wickets to his name. He has also smashed 107 runs in 8 ODI innings with a strike rate of above 140.

Arzan Nagwaswalla

Arzan Nagwaswalla has been the center of all the limelight ever since his name appeared in the national squad that was chosen to take on New Zealand in the ICC World Test Championship final and the five-match Test series against England. However, he has been putting the hard yards in the domestic circuit for the last couple of years.

He was the second-highest wicket-taker in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2020-21, finishing the season with 19 wickets in just 7 innings. He was also among the leading wicket-takers during the 2019-20 season when he finished with 17 wickets in 9 innings. Nagwaswalla is another left-arm pacer in the national cricketing circuit who can be extremely successful in the international circuit in the coming years.
