England Test captain Joe Root scored a spectacular 153 against West Indies in the first innings of the second Test at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. Root scored successive hundreds after his 109 in the second innings of the Antigua Test.

Root carried his brilliance with the bat in the Caribbean as he scored 153  off 316 balls, his innings was laced with 14 boundaries. It was the 12th 150-plus score for the Yorkshire batter in Test cricket.

Joe Root surpassed Alastair Cook’s Test record of scoring most 150-plus scores for England

Root went past his predecessor Alastair Cook in the list to become England’s most successful batter to achieve the most 150-plus scores, the former England skipper had 11 next to his name.

Root also has the most 150-plus scores in the red-ball format amongst the active cricketers with former Indian skipper Virat Kohli having breached the 150-run mark 10 times in his career so far.

Root joined the likes of Brian Lara, Mahela Jayawardene, Michael Clarke and Graeme Smith to score seven 150-plus scores as the captain of the team with only legendary player Don Bradman (8) and Kohli (9) have achieved more in this category.

Joe Root has scored five 150-plus Test scores in away Test matches

Five of those seven innings have been scored in overseas conditions, the most by any Test captain to notch up most 150-plus scores away from home. The 31-year-old has hit the milestone twice in Sri Lanka (228 & 186 in Galle, 2021) and one each against India (218 in Chennai, 2021), New Zealand (226 in Hamilton, 2019) and West Indies (153 in Barbados, 2022).

Root made some incredible partnerships with Dan Lawrence (164) for the fourth wicket and Ben Stokes (129) for the fifth wicket during his sensational knock as England mustered a mammoth total of 507/9 in the first innings. West Indies were at 71/1 at the end of the second day’s play as Kraigg Brathwaite (28*) and Shamarh Brooks (31*) remained not out for the hosts.

Root is just 125 runs away from completing the milestone of 10,000 Test runs, he will be the 14th player to achieve the feat overall and second England player after Cook (12472) to do so.
