Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri backed Rohit Sharma as a captain to do well in the Asia Cup 2023 as well as the ICC World Cup 2023. He hailed him as a seasoned captain and said that when it comes to big tournaments he switches on in a different manner.

Two big events in Asia Cup 2023 and ICC World Cup 2023 are lined up for the Indian Cricket Team. They have been under the scanner for a while for their inability to win the big tournaments for a while now.

With Asia Cup slated to take place in Sri Lanka and World Cup to take place in India, they surely will be favourites to win both events, especially with conditions being familiar to them with the kind of spinners they have in the team.

The focus will be on the skipper Rohit Sharma as there will be massive responsibility on him. Not only as a batter but also as a leader as a lot of hopes will be relying on him. Along with him, he needs to carry other players well if India needs to fancy their chances of winning.

Ravi Shastri said that Rohit Sharma will up his ante as a captain ahead of the World Cup. He pointed out that the skipper knows the nucleus of the players and he needs to make sure that his batters are flexible.

Speaking to Star Sports, he explained: “I think he is a seasoned captain. Come the World Cup, he will up the ante. Bilaterals are one thing. When it comes to big tournaments, you switch on in a different manner. He knows the nucleus of the players. It is about him ensuring that everyone in that batting lineup knows that they don’t own batting positions.

“You’ve got to be flexible with your batting ladder. No matter who the name of the player is. You do not own positions. You got to have flexibility. That is paramount, and use the right guys against the right oppositions.”

ICC World Cup 2023: It is for me pretty straightforward – Ravi Shastri on Indian selectors picking Squad

Ravi Shastri further went on to say that it won’t be difficult to pick the squad for selectors because they have a set pool of players. He added that he doesn’t see any headaches in picking the team until some other is picked instead of another.

He explained: “The think tank would have thought about a group of 18 or 20 players at least four or five months before the World Cup and then given opportunities to each one of them, kept an eye on the injuries too, you know, whichever players who were part of the mix who got injuries and just come back, and then pick the right guys.

“It is for me pretty straightforward because you’ll go on current form and you’ll go on the 18 players. There aren’t 20 or 22 to choose from. I don’t think it’s a headache. There will obviously be a headache when you pick one instead of another and one or two guys have to miss out.”

India is yet to name the squad for the Asia Cup 2023. As per the reports they will be revealing the team on 20th August and it’s fair to say that it’ll give a great understanding about the World Cup squad as well.
