Team India won’t progress in the T20 World Cup after New Zealand defeated Afghanistan by eight wickets on Sunday.

Afghanistan’s loss not only meant their run in the tournament would end, but also India exited along with them.

India out of T20 World Cup semi-final race

India lost their first two fixtures against Pakistan and New Zealand because of dismal performance with the bat, especially the top-order.

However, India won their next two games against Afghanistan and Scotland with heavy margins, but that was too late for Virat Kohli & co.

Indian team and their fans were hoping for Afghanistan to win against the Black Caps so that the former could qualify in the semis on a superior net run rate.

But that wasn’t the case for the Indians, and they will have to be satisfied with their position in Group 2.

Crashing out in this manner is a tough pill to swallow: Gautam Gambhir

Former Indian player Gautam Gambhir said that it was tough to accept that India had to rely on Afghanistan to qualify for the semis and also mentioned that there was a lack of preparations in the Indian camp.

This was never a good feeling. As a sportsperson you’d want to be master of your destiny rather than wait for a few permutations to go right to know how far you are progressing in a competition,” Gambhir wrote in his column for Times of India.

“Indian team would tell you what I mean. Champions train to win, they work hard to score that one run more than the opposition and not wait for the result of New Zealand vs Afghanistan match to know their fate. Crashing out in this manner or for that matter losing out on Net Run Rate like South Africa is a bitter pill to swallow,” he further wrote.

Gambhir reminded of India’s achievement of defeating the likes of Australia and England in the Test series this year, and also India are leading against England in the away Test series, which is yet to be completed.

Gambhir urged the fans to not be disheartened and continue to support the team as they have been doing.

“I’d also urge the fans to continue to be proud of the Indian team. We will be disrespectful and unfaithful as their supporters if we judged them on this solitary performance in the ongoing World Cup. Yes, we lost to Pakistan. Yes, we were beaten on strategy by New Zealand. Yes, our friends from across the border are in the semis and we are not.

“But hold on. This Indian team won us a series in Australia early this year. Next they turned it around when England visited India to beat them in all three formats. We currently lead them 2-1 in the away Test series with the last game to be played next year,” Gambhir mentioned.

India will play their final match of the group stage against Namibia on Monday at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
