All-rounder Jason Holder was named as the replacement for the injured Obed McCoy in the West Indies squad for the ongoing T20 World Cup 2021. The tournament is taking place in the UAE, where the Windies have already lost two out of two matches.

The defending champions might well be eliminated in the group stage unless they get their act together and start putting up the results they need. They have received a big boost in the form of Holder, who was in good for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the recently concluded IPL 2021 season.

He will be replacing McCoy, who played in the first match against England which West Indies lost quite comprehensively. However, he sustained a right shin injury which forced him out of the remainder of the tournament.

The Cricket West Indies (CWI) confirmed the news on Wednesday. Holder is already in the UAE as he was named as a travelling reserve with the squad. Speaking about McCoy’s injury, chair selector, Roger Harper said:

McCoy did really well in the T20Is earlier this year and adapted well in the opening match against England. He was a key member of the bowling unit and it’s unfortunate he won’t be able to take any further part in the tournament. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the field ready to go again in the near future.

West Indies will take on Bangladesh in their next match at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Friday for which, Jason Holder will be available.
