Spinner Varun Chakravarthy will be missing India‘s game against Afghanistan, skipper Virat Kohli announced at the toss, in Abu Dhabi. Mohammad Nabi won the coin toss and has elected to field first, citing dew as the primary reason for this decision.
Varun Chakravarthy is suffering from a niggle, and hence he’s been rested. In comes R Ashwin, who will be playing his first T20I for India since July 2017!
Varun Chakravarthy, who had been in form during the IPL, went wicketless in both matches so far in the T20 World Cup returning with figures of 0/23 against New Zealand and 0/33 against Pakistan.
Kohli also announced another change: Suryakumar Yadav is fit and back in the eleven; he replaces Ishan Kishan. Yadav missed the New Zealand encounter due to back spasms.
The Indian skipper also confirmed that Yadav will slot into his usual number 4 position – meaning Rohit Sharma comes back to the top of the order and Kohli back at 3.
At the toss, Virat Kohli said, “Firstly there’s no denying the fact that the situation is a tricky one. Having said that there’s still a chance. We as a team will look at the chance and try to play positive cricket. We know we haven’t played up to potential whatever the reasons might be – need to brush that aside. Would have bowled first. But it’s not a bad thing against a side like Afghanistan who look to put up runs on the board. Couple of changes – Surya is back as he’s fit. Ashwin replaces Varun who has a bit of a niggle.”
With two losses in two outings, India are hanging by a thread in the tournament and a loss against Afghanistan will send them packing. Mohammad Nabi’s side, who have 4 points in 3 games with a high net run rate of +3.097, will move closer to the semi-final spot should they manage an upset over the Men In Blue.
