T20 World Cup 2021: Updated Super 12 Points Table After England vs Sri Lanka

A memorable century from Jos Buttler and a clinical bowling performance helped England qualify for the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2021 with their fourth win in four games as they defeated Sri Lanka by 26 runs in Sharjah.

Chasing 164, Sri Lanka lost their way in the first over with Pathum Nissanka getting run out. While Charith Asalanka started off in a blazing fashion with a six and three boundaries but soon fell to Adil Rashid, who also dismissed Kusal Perera as Sri Lanka stuttered to 34/3.

The Lankan chase was further dented when Chris Jordan trapped Avishka Fernando plumb lbw. Bhanuka Rajapaksa once again looked glorious in his shot-making, whacking two sixes and two fours, before holing out at long-on off Chris Woakes.

Wanindu Hasaranga and skipper Dasun Shanaka built the chase back. Hasaranga took a six off Tymal Mills, who walked off the field through his second over with a quad injury, and Shanaka off Livingstone.

Hasaranga threatened England collecting more boundaries before he was excellently caught in the deep by the tag-team work of substitute Sam Billings and Jason Roy ending the 53-run stand. Jos Buttler then ran out Shanaka, effectively ending Sri Lanka’s challenge.

After being put in to bat first, England started on a positive note taking 12 runs from the first over. They then met an in-form Wanindu Hasaranga, who knocked over Jason Roy’s off-stump on his second delivery and had Jonny Bairstow lbw, giving away just five runs in his first two overs.

In between those two dismissals, Jos Buttler played a couple of classy stokes for fours, but saw Dawid Malan being bowled by Dushmantha Chameera. England were in trouble at 36/3 at the end of the powerplay.

England didn’t score any more boundary until the 10th over as Buttler and Eoin Morgan focused on wicket prevention and strike rotation. Buttler then took two boundaries and a six off the Lankan pacers to relieve some pressure and soon brought up a valiant fifty off 45 balls.

England turned the tide as Lahiru Kumara then conceded three sixes in an over before Buttler slammed Shanaka a couple of maximums. Morgan then charged down to thump Hasaranga for a six before the spinner castled the England captain.

Buttler, though, hammered Chameera for 14 runs in the last over, bringing up his century on the last ball of the innings with a gigantic six as England posted 163.
