Opener KL Rahul was pleased with his own and India‘s batting performance against Afghanistan on Wednesday in Abu Dhabi.

In the must-win game, India put on their best batting display of the T20 World Cup so far, smashing 210 runs and giving Afghanistan a mountain to climb.

Rohit Sharma thumped 74 off 47 balls while KL Rahul played second fiddle, ending with 69 off 48. KL Rahul thought the Abu Dhabi pitch was the best they have batted on so far.

“It’s the best wicket we’ve batted on in the last three games. The wicket looks better if the openers give you a solid foundation, and that’s what Rohit and I tried to do. Very happy with the batting performance,” KL Rahul told Star Sports after India’s innings.

After setting their eye in, both the opener went after Afghanistan’s main man, Rashid Khan, who conceded 36 in his 4 overs. Sharma especially went after Khan with a couple of big maximums. KL Rahul talked about his and Rohit’s understanding and they plan to attack Rashid.

“We’ve played together for a long time, we understand each other, even with the running between the wickets, and we have the freedom to go out there and play our games.

“I was trying to stay in good shape and not muscle the ball. You either play out the main bowler or go after him, but we had wickets in hand, so it doesn’t matter if it’s Rashid Khan or anyone else, and it came off for us today. Feels good to get runs off their No. 1 bowler,” he added.

Rishabh Pant – Hardik Pandya take toll on the bowlers after big Rohit Sharma – KL Rahul opening stand

Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, reunited at the top, gave India a quick start. Sharma lofted Nabi for a boundary in the first over before both of them took 16 runs off the second over, bowled by Sharafuddin Ashraf.

The fifth over, bowled by Naveen-ul-Haq, yielded 17 runs for India as Sharma hammered the pacer for two fours and a six. India finished the powerplay at 53/0.

Afghanistan tried to pull things back, but Rashid Khan, their main man, leaked 11 runs in his second over.

Having set themselves in, both then just toyed with the Afghanistan bowlers. Naveen was taken for 16 runs; Naib for 12; Rohit send Rashid Khan twice over the ropes to demoralise Afghanistan further.

Karim Janat ended the 140-run opening stand with the wicket of Sharma, who departed after scoring 74 runs off 47 balls. Naib castled Rahul for 69 off 48.

Rishabh Pant then whacked two straight sixes to Naib before Hardik Pandya smashed three fours to Hamid. Pant and Pandya plundered the bowlers to every part of the ground in their remarkable partnership of 63 runs off just 21 balls, giving India a big finish.
