Team India posted their first win of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 on board thanks to the brilliance of former captain Virat Kohli and all-rounder Hardik Pandya. However, the win was not without its hiccups along the way against arch-rivals Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Sunday (October 23).

Team India captain Rohit Sharma sent all-rounder Axar Patel to No. 4 in the batting order as his side chased 160 to win. The experiment failed miserably as India lost their first four wickets for just 31 runs on the board. The absence of a left-handed batter at the top of the order was sorely felt.

Captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid will be considering bringing in Rishabh Pant into the playing XI for their next ICC T20 World Cup 2022 match against the Netherlands at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Thursday (October 27). Rishabh Pant didn’t find a place in the playing XI against Pakistan with Dinesh Karthik preferred as the specialist wicketkeeper in the side.

Axar Patel, on the other hand, failed with the ball as well – leaking 21 runs in the only over he bowled in the match. If Rishabh Pant is indeed brought into the final playing XI against the Dutch, Hardik Pandya will have to play the full-time role of the fifth bowler in the side.

Hardik Pandya was impressive with the ball as well against Pakistan, picking up three important wickets and scoring 40 runs with the bat, putting on a record 113 runs for the fifth wicket with Virat Kohli who scored 82*. India might also like to try out Yuzvendra Chahal in place of Ravichandran Ashwin, who was less than impressive with the ball against Pakistan in the opening match.

Men in Blue will also be hoping for a convincing victory over the Netherlands to increase their Net Run Rate (NRR) and solidify their place atop the standings. Bangladesh, South Africa, and Pakistan, in addition to Netherlands and Zimbabwe from the First Round, are in Group 2 of the Super 12 along with India. India entered the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 with high expectations of breaking their 15-year title drought and winning their second championship behind a team loaded with bat and ball talent.

Virat Kohli single-handedly powered India to an epic four-wicket win over arch-rivals Pakistan with a magnificent 53-ball 82 not out in their big-ticket ICC T20 World Cup 2022 game. Pakistan recovered from a wobbly start to post a fighting 159 for eight. India completed the chase in the last ball, with Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya (40) doing the bulk of the scoring after a horror start to their innings.

India 160 for 6 (Kohli 82*, Hardik 40) beat Pakistan 159 for 8 (Masood 52*, Iftikhar 51, Arshdeep 3-32, Hardik 3-30) by four wickets

He scored 15 off 14 balls against Australia in the 1st warm-up game. He scored only 4 off 7 balls against Pakistan in India’s first ICC T20 World Cup 2022 match before being caught.

He was rested for the two warm-up games against Western Australia XI. He scored 19 off 13 balls against Australia in another warm-up game. His knock of 82* off 53 balls saw India win a last-ball thriller against Pakistan. He hit 6 fours and 4 sixes and batted at a strike rate of 154.72.

Suryakumar Yadav-the man who can’t do any wrong in this T20I format and India’s own Mr. 360, is one of the most improved players since the last World Cup and is going through a purple patch.  The right-handed batsman scored 119 runs in 3 games at an average of 59.50 and a strike rate of 195+ against South Africa.

Since regaining his full fitness, Hardik Pandya has just been seen winning games single-handedly for India and is contributing in all three facets of the game. He has been striking at 151.39 since coming back into the team and is expected to play with this same aggressive intent in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. He provides the team with the necessary balance, i.e., the 6th bowler.

The right-handed batsman slammed 105 runs in 3 games against Australia with 1 half-century. He could not pick any wicket in the Australia series. Hardik Pandya was not part of the previous series against South Africa. He scored 44 runs combined in the two warm-up games against Western Australia XI. Dinesh Karthik

The man who made a comeback to the team in a more specialized role of a finisher is essential for the team to finish strong in the last few overs. Dinesh Karthik is batting at a strike rate of 150+ since his comeback and has given solid finishes and won a few games on his merit this year.

Against Australia, Dinesh Karthik scored 17 runs in 3 games. He was unbeaten in 2 innings. In one game, he slammed a four and six in the final over when the team needed 9 runs. In the previous T20I against South Africa, the right-handed batsman slammed 63 runs in 2 innings, with a 46-run knock in one match.

Dinesh Karthik scored 29 runs in the two warm-up games against Western Australia XI while Rishabh Pant managed only 18 runs. Dinesh Karthik scored 20 against Australia in 1st warm-up match. He scored only 1 in India’s first ICC T20 World Cup 2022 game against Pakistan.

Rishabh Pant may play in place of Axar Patel who had an extremely poor day in India’s first ICC T20 World Cup 2022 game against Pakistan scoring only 2 before being run out and conceding 21 runs in one solitary over. He may play his first ICC T20 World Cup 2022 game against the Netherlands.

Rishabh Pant scored 27 runs in one match in the previous T20I series against South Africa. Rishabh Pant has amassed 961 runs in 62 T20Is at a strike rate of 127.45 at a mediocre average of 24.03.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Bhuvneshwar Kumar will now shoulder the responsibility of leading the bowling attack in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah. He is lethal with the new bowl as he can swing the bowl both ways, creating problems for the batters at the top. He is India’s top wicket-taker in this format this year. However, his death bowling is a concern.

He picked 3/32 in India’s first ICC T20 World Cup 2022 game against Pakistan claiming the wickets of in form Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Asif Ali.

Veteran pacer Mohammed Shami replaced injured Jasprit Bumrah in the 15-member Indian cricket squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022, starting October 16 in Australia. Mohammed Shami last played in T20Is during the last edition of the ICC 2021 T20I World Cup in the UAE before playing against Pakistan in India’s first ICC T20 World Cup 2022 game.

He was supposed to play in the six T20Is at home against Australia and South Africa but tested positive for COVID-19 and had to remain in isolation. On return, he had to prove his fitness before NCA approved his trip to Australia.

Mohammed Shami played the warm-up game against Australia as he hasn’t played any T20I since the last T20I World Cup. He picked 3 wickets conceding 4 runs while bowling the final 20th over against Australia in the warm-up game. He thus defended 11 runs successfully in the final over as India won by 6 runs. He picked 1/25 in India’s first ICC T20 World Cup 2022 game against Pakistan.

After missing out on last year’s 2021 T20I World Cup, Yuzvendra Chahal has been included in this year’s 2022 T20I World Cup. He has repeatedly proved his worth for India during the middle overs. He has already taken 21 wickets at an economy of 7.60 this year.

In his previous series against Australia, the right-arm spinner grabbed 2 wickets in 3 games at an average of 38.0 and an economy of 9.12. He is the top spin bowler for India so far, having taken the joint most wickets alongside Bhuvneshwar Kumar for India in T20Is-85 scalps in 69 T20Is.

He played the first warm-up game against Western Australia XI where he picked 2 scalps conceding only 15 runs and averaged a mere 7.5 at an economy of 3.8. He picked 1/28 in 3 overs in the warm-up game against Australia. He didn’t play against Pakistan in India’s first ICC T20 World Cup 2022 game but may play instead of Ravichandran Ashwin who had an off day returning with 0/23 in 3 overs.
