On Monday, October 31, during Chetan Sharma‘s press conference, someone asked if the current national selection committee had held its final meeting.

The chief selector wisely declined the request, implying that the Board of Control for Cricket in India would be in charge of any changes to the selection committee, contrary to media speculation (BCCI). So, are reforms to the committee in the works?

With some degree of accuracy, it may be stated that the committee did not reveal the four squads on Monday just because it was going to be its final meeting.

The fact is that it intended to choose another team as well, but the fifth squad was unable to be chosen due to the time difference between India and Australia (where Sharma is). The committee will reconvene in a few days to reveal the India A team for Bangladesh.

Regarding the future of the Sharma committee, a lot depends on how well India performs in the current T20 World Cup. There is always the desire to start over with a new BCCI administration in place, but if the team performs well in the World Cup, the board won’t have much of a choice.

Despite having far larger expectations, it cannot be said that the Rohit Sharma-led team’s predicted semifinal performance is unimpressive.

Changes to the committee might be required in the unlikely event that the team doesn’t make the final four. Without an overhaul, there will only be one addition (to cover the hole left by the West Zone) and possibly one more adjustment.

The BCCI aims to completely depoliticize the game with professionals, unlike in the past, and allow players full control over cricket-related matters.

Sarfaraz Khan And Avesh Khan Likely For India A Squad

The selection committee’s choice of Avesh Khan was one of the most important ones. One month after being considered for a spot in the World Cup squad, the Madhya Pradesh pacer has been cut from four separate squads. The selectors’ attention was diverted from Avesh by bowlers like Yash Dayal, Kuldeep Sen, and Umran Malik who had undeniably made an impression.

Sarfaraz Khan was also a topic of conversation, but the Mumbai side’s go-to batsman missed out on the team since other regulars like Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Shubman Gill are returning for the red-ball matches in Bangladesh.

Hanuma Vihari would have been chosen if a slot had been open as well. However, Sarfaraz will be chosen for India-A trip to Bangladesh the following month with others including Yash Dayal and Rohan Kunnummal.

KL Rahul Probable To Get Another Chance

The fitness of Dinesh Karthik, who complained of back spasms during India’s match against South Africa on Sunday, is not a concern for the team management in Australia. Throughout the game, Rishabh Pant was positioned behind the stumps.

Karthik travelled to Adelaide with the team from Perth, and according to reports in Australia, the team management is awaiting word on the keeper- batsman’s health.  There is not much anxiety on that aspect because Pant is prepared to take over and Karthik is not in terrific shape.

The vice-captain’s poor performance—who has only 22 runs in three World Cup games so far—is a cause for concern, but the team management appears to believe that Rahul may yet pull off a game-winning performance.
