Australian fast bowling legend Brett Lee expressed his disappointment at India’s choice to miss out on Umran Malik for the T20 World Cup in Australia, saying he would have delighted to see the Jammu and Kashmir fast bowler delivering goods on Australia’s pace-heavy and bouncy tracks.

After doing well in the IPL 2022, Umran Malik earned his debut in international play in June 2022 during India’s tour of Ireland.

Working for SunRisers Hyderabad under coach Dale Steyn, the pacer has taken 22 wickets and displayed increased control. However, Umran was costly in the 3 games he participated in, giving up 12.44 runs per over while taking 2 wickets.

On the other side, Cameron Green, who dazzled with two half-centuries in the T20I series against India in India in September, has been in outstanding form with the bat in T20Is. Green made his debut earlier in 2022 and has since scored 134 runs in 5 T20Is at an incredible strike rate of above 180.

Green even participated in the first of a two-match T20I series against the West Indies on Wednesday in Queensland, but he will not play in the T20 World Cup due to Australia’s issue with having too many players vying for the top-order positions.

“I would love to see Umran Malik unleashed”: Brett Lee

In an interview with India Today, Brett Lee stated that the omission of Umran Malik and the exclusion of Cameron Green from the Australian T20 World Cup squad were two major selection decisions that teams made that was unexpected. “I would love to see Umran Malik unleashed in Australia, yes. So, to me the big surprise of his T20 World Cup – Umran Malik for India, I think he should play,” Brett Lee said.

“Cameron Green has to play for Australia. I can’t fathom how Cameron Green isn’t in the team,” Brett Lee added on the sidelines of the Legends League tournament.

India went to Australia on Thursday, October 6 to attend a Perth training camp. Two warm-up games will be played before the practice games for Rohit Sharma’s team. On October 23, India will play Pakistan in Melbourne to begin to play in the T20 World Cup.
