Former India National Cricket Team all-rounder Madan Lal, who was part of India’s 1983 ICC Cricket World Cup-winning squad, said that Team India played “timid cricket with fear” in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final 2, which was the reason behind their embarrassing defeat against Team England.

On Thursday, November 10, 2022, India got eliminated from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 after facing a heartbreaking 10-wicket defeat against the Three Lions in the semi-final at the Adelaide Oval.

While batting first, India posted 168/6 on the board with the help of Hardik Pandya and Virat Kohli’s half-centuries. However, England chased down the target in a dominant fashion in just 16 overs, thanks to the batting masterclass of Jos Buttler and Alex Hales.

Meanwhile, Madan Lal criticised Indian spinners for their poor show in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, saying that both Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel didn’t turn the ball.

“We played timid cricket with fear and that’s the reason why we lost. I already said our spinners aren’t turning the ball and if you don’t get turn, you can’t pick wickets. Batters know how to play on knowing that the ball is coming straight. I haven’t seen Ashwin turn a single ball and so is the case with Axar Patel,” Madan Lal was quoted as saying to Aaj Tak.

Madan Lal also slammed India’s decision to bring wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant close to the stumps for a few deliveries when Bhuvneshwar Kumar was bowling his first over of the semi-final game. Notably, Jos Buttler smashed three boundaries in the first over itself to provide England with a great start.

“We also made a mistake by bringing up the wicketkeeper and made things easier for the batters. If the keeper was back, then Bhuvneshwar would have got swing and there was a chance of the batter getting caught behind. We gave up 13 runs in the first over. Bhuvneshwar isn’t a medium pacer, he is your wicket-taking bowler,” Madan Lal added.
