Under MS Dhoni’s leadership, India won the first T20 World Cup in 2007. The Indian team, captained by Rohit Sharma, will begin their campaign on October 23 against arch-rivals Pakistan in the Super 12 stage of the 8th ICC T20 World Cup, which is currently being played in Australia.

Only the West Indies were able to win two championships, in 2012 and 2016. In the seven completed editions of the tournament to date, there have been as many as six different champions.

The Indian team entered the competition without the services of two key players: all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and pacer Jasprit Bumrah. Mohammed Shami, an accomplished bowler, will lead the Indian bowling attack without Bumrah. Other than Shami, India’s pace arsenal will include young Arshdeep Singh, Harshal Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Pandya.

“We will have to focus on certain things”: Rohit Sharma

Since 2013, when MS Dhoni’s team won the Champions Trophy, India has not claimed an ICC championship. Following that, the team advanced to the semifinals of the 2015 50-over World Cup, the 2016 T20 World Cup, the final of the 2017 Champions Trophy, and the 2019 50-over World Cup.

“I do not want to say pressure, but it is a definitely challenge for us to come out on top in ICC tournaments. Yes, there has been not the performance that we would like to show in ICC tournaments, especially big games, but I believe the opportunity always comes and we have the opportunity now to come here and do well so I think we will have to focus on certain things to get that right” Rohit Sharma said.

“Yes, it is a challenge to not win the ICC trophy for nine years, if I am not wrong. The last one we won was in 2013. It has been a challenge with a team like us, there are a lot of expectations, and we are certainly a little disappointed with that.”

“This tournament gives us that chance to change it and do well. We certainly know we have to play our best cricket to do well here. We need to take it one game at a time, and then go ahead,” Rohit Sharma added.

India’s opening encounter at the 2022 T20 World Cup is a highly anticipated encounter against Pakistan on Sunday.
