Glenn Phillips’ running between the wickets was a standout feature of his spectacular hundred against Sri Lanka at the SCG.

Although he did imply that it would assist him avoid the chance of getting run-out backing up, which he maintained was a perfectly justifiable dismissal, Glenn Phillips’ creative decision to take up a sprinter’s start position at the non-strikers’ end was not pre-planned.

Even though Phillips later acknowledged he had actually done things a little bit wrong, his position low in the crease as though in the starting blocks, rather than the traditional method of watching the bowler run in, piqued interest.

Bowler Has The Right To Take Bails Off: Glenn Phillips

“It’s my responsibility to make sure that I’m in the crease and leave at the right time,” New Zealand batsman Glenn Phillips said, adding that if the non-striker is backing up, the bowlers are entirely within their rights to remove the bails.

“From a sprinter’s start when you’re trying not to be out of the crease as much as possible — there’s been a lot going around about Mankads and leaving the crease,” Phillips said at the post-match press conference after New Zealand’s win over Sri Lanka.

“At the end of the day, it’s my responsibility to make sure that I’m in the crease and leave at the right time. If the bowler is doing his job, then he has the right to be able to take the bails off.

“For me to be able to get into that start, that position as quick as possible, it just made sense,” he added.

Glenn Phillips shone with the bat as New Zealand crushed Sri Lanka by 65 runs thanks to his brilliant 64-ball 104.

“It was very much spur of the moment. I guess the position was to be able to see the bowlers and take off as quick as possible,” he added.

Deepti Sharma ran out Charlie Dean at the non-end striker’s for leaving her crease too early, handing a 3-0 ODI series sweep in England last month. Charlie Dean is the subject of the game of Mankading, which is colloquially named after former Indian cricketer Vinoo Mankad.

Previously seen as illegal but fair play in the gentleman’s game, the ICC now refers to these dismissals as “run out.” It is no longer listed in the “unfair play” section of the rule book as of October 1.

If such dismissals go against the “spirit of the game,” the argument goes on.
