Pakistan endured a five-wicket loss in the final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 to England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Sunday, November 13. The Jos Buttler-led team restricted Pakistan to 137/8 before chasing the target down with six balls to spare. Ben Stokes scored 52 runs off 49 balls to help his team win.

The defeat has sparked a verbal war among current and former cricketers. Mohammad Shami took to Twitter to respond to Shoaib Akhtar for criticizing India’s semi-final performance. However, the Indian pacer had no idea that his message would enrage even more Pakistan cricket fans.

Following Pakistan’s defeat, former cricketer Shoaib Akhtar posted a “heartbroken” emoji, and Shami responded to it by saying, “Sorry brother, it’s called Karma.”

We Should Try To End All Of This – Shahid Afridi

Mohammed Shami’s controversial tweet wasn’t well received by the Pakistani media. While speaking to Samaa TV, former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi stated that current players should avoid getting involved in controversies of this nature.

“We are cricketers, we are ambassadors and role models. We should try to end all of this. We are neighbours. Aisi cheezein nahi honi chahiye jisse nafrat faile logo ke beech me. Agar ham hi aisa karenge to aam aadmi se ham kya ummeed rakhenge (We shouldn’t do things that cultivate hate. If do such things, what can we expect from others). Our relationships improve with sports. We want to play with them, see them play in Pakistan,” Afridi said during the discussion.

“Even if you are retired, you shouldn’t do this. But you are a part of the current team, you should avoid such things,” he added.

England won the eighth edition of the T20 World Cup, making them the indisputable white-ball champions, as they already hold the world title in the fifty-over format. They outclassed Pakistan, who arrived in Melbourne hoping to recreate the glory of former skipper Imran Khan’s 1992 50-over World Cup victory.
