A lot is at stake for Indian women’s cricket team skipper Mithali Raj as she prepares to lead her team in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 in New Zealand. She made his debut way back in 2000 in New Zealand and 22 years later in her international career, she is on the cusp of winning her maiden World Cup title.

Mithali Raj saw her team lose against England in the final of the 2017 Women’s World Cup and this time around she is hopeful to end on the right side of the result. She was also a member of the team that lost in the 2005 Women’s World Cup final to Australia. Mithali incidentally was the captain back then and she is the captain now as well. In a video posted by the ICC on their Twitter handle, Mithali is seen to be speaking about her team’s preparations and her dream of winning the World Cup.

“I have come a long way from the 2000 World Cup, that also in New Zealand. I missed (matches of) that World Cup because of typhoid and here I am. It has come a full circle and I am looking forward to finishing the journey,” said Mithali.

“I would look forward to all my players doing well in the World Cup and that will give the Indian team the opportunity to get a hand on that elusive cup” she further added.

Heading into the World Cup, India lost an ODI series against New Zealand 1-4. Though they lost the series, their batters got some useful runs and are in form heading into the first game against arch-rivals Pakistan.

“What we are looking at improving as a team for the World Cup is something we worked in the last series and before that. Yes, there was a bit of concern during South Africa and England tour. By the Australia and New Zealand series, the team has come around well to score above 250 consistently. We look forward to doing the same during the World Cup, probably much better than that” Raj concluded saying.

The World Cup will be played from March 4 to April 3 with India playing against Pakistan (March 6), New Zealand (March 10) and West Indies (March 10) in their first three games.
