ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 Points Table. South Africa defeated India in the second Test of the ongoing three-match Test series at the Wanderers in Johannesburg on January 6, 2022. On the fourth day of the Test match, Proteas batters continued to pile on the runs, especially after the first two sessions of the day were washed out. This also brought a huge change in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) points table.
In the ICC World Test Championship, 2021-23 teams will be ranked based on the percentage of points. A team gets 12 (100%) points for a win, 6 (50%) points for a tie, and 4 (33.33%) points for a draw. Also for slow over-rates teams will lose one championship point for each over short.
South Africa came into this Test match after losing the first Test in Centurion and were under pressure to win this Test to draw level in the series. They were handed a huge break when India captain Virat Kohli was ruled out of the game on the morning of the first day due to a back spasm and KL Rahul led the team.
The home side led the charge, bowling India out for 202 runs after Rahul won the toss and chose to bat. Rahul top-scored with 50, while Ravichandran Ashwin made 46 and others struggled as Marco Jansen picked 4/31 and Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi picked three scalps each.
South Africa replied with 229 with half-centuries from Temba Bavuma and Keegan Petersen. Shardul Thakur picked a career-best 7/61 to keep the lead to just 27 runs.
However, the visitors failed to capitalize on that as they were bowled out for 266 runs, setting South Africa only 240 runs to win. Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane showed that there was still fire beneath them, while Rabada, Ngidi, and Jansen picked three wickets each.
South Africa had done well in the chase, losing just 3 wickets for 126 runs at stumps on day three. Aiden Markram made 31 and Keegan Petersen made 28 runs. Rassie van der Dussen made 40 runs, adding a crucial 82 runs for the third wicket. However, it was skipper Dean Elgar, who stood there like a rock and with help of Temba Bavuma, took the South African team to a special win in the second Test.
