South Africa escaped elimination from the World Test Championship (WTC) final by drawing the third and final game against Australia. While Australia has all but qualified for the summit clash, three teams are competing for the remaining one position; how does this result influence India’s chances?

On the final day of the Test match in Sydney, when more than 150 overs were wasted because of the rain and a soggy outfield, Australia faced a difficult challenge in trying to take 14 wickets.

Despite forcing follow-on and bowling South Africa out in the first innings, Australia could only add two more wickets when captain Pat Cummins chose to shake hands with the opponent with five overs remaining.

As a result of the tie, both teams received four points, lowering Australia’s points percentage (PCT) from 78 to 75.56. The current cycle’s pacesetters Australia just have one series left, and it’s a crucial one against India in India. Although Australia is very certain to go to the World Cup final, they would still like to pick up at least one victory there.

Australia’s PCT will drop to 59.6 if they do lose all four games, though. Australia losing all four games would result in India receiving 48 points from the series and raising their PCT to 68.05, which would guarantee qualification for the World Cup for the Rohit Sharma-led team. However, the Proteas are still in it.

South Africa’s PCT currently stands at 48.72:

South Africa still has a two-match home series against the West Indies and their PCT is currently 48.72. Australia is essentially through if the Proteas win both games because their PCT will only increase to 55.5.

So, in order for South Africa to have a chance of making it to the final, Australia would need to keep winning, but Cummins and the company will face enormous difficulties in doing so given the sub-continental terrain.

India’s PCT currently stands at 58.93:

The PCT for India is now 58.93. The PCT will be 51.39 if they win one of their four games, 56.9 if they win two, and 62.5 if they win all four. In order to qualify for the WTC final for a second straight year, the Team must defeat Australia by winning at least a few games.

A fourth team, Sri Lanka, is also competing. To have a chance, they must defeat New Zealand in New Zealand, and that too in both of the Tests they play there. This seems unlikely at this stage given that they haven’t triumphed against the Black Caps in their home country for more than 29 years.
