Team India’s preparations for the ODI World Cup at home later this year started with the ODI series against Sri Lanka. They clean swept their Asian rivals 3-0 at home and are now leading 1-0 against the Kiwis. Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who played his last ODI against South Africa last year is not a part of this series at home. He last played for India in the T20 World Cup 2022.

The veteran spinner has expressed his feelings on how can the Indian team win the ODI World Cup at home. The Men in Blue last won the World Cup in 2011 also at home under MS Dhoni. Since then the Indian team has been waiting to lift their next World Cup.

Ashwin in his Youtube channel spoke about how Rohit Sharma and his players have a good chance of winning the World Cup at home given their good record at home off late. India have largely dominated oppositions across formats and continued a good winning run.

“India’s home record is 14-4 in this space [since 2019 World Cup], which is a 78 to 80 percent win record in India. All of these 18 ODIs have happened in different venues every single time (14 venues).

“The four losses that I mentioned have happened in Chennai, Mumbai, Pune and Lucknow. It’s all evening in the evening. Largely, India have batted first and posted a score that they believe is par and par-plus.”

Ravichandran Ashwin then shifted his focus to the ongoing series against New Zealand. India won the high-scoring first ODI in Hyderabad by 12 runs and will play the next ODI on January 21 looking to seal the series. The off-spinner further said that the series against New Zealand will give an idea as to where the India team stands in terms of preparations.

“New Zealand series will give us a fair indication as to where the Indian team stands because Sri Lanka, a lot of people believe, were not the favorite. However, India, I believe, are favorite heading into this particular World Cup. India’s quality is just phenomenal in this format and Virat’s return to form is no doubt an extremely important feature” he further added.

The second ODI will be played in Raipur on January 21 followed by the third in Indore (January 24). Both teams then play a three-match T20I series. The T20Is will be played in Ranchi (January 27), Lucknow (January 29), and Ahmedabad (February 1) respectively.
