The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) committee made a couple of changes in Team India’s Test squad for the upcoming two-match series against Bangladesh. In the absence of Rohit Sharma, who was ruled out of the first test due to a thumb injury, KL Rahul will lead the opening match, with Cheteshwar Pujara serving as his deputy ahead of Rishabh Pant.

Under Rohit’s captaincy, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah, and Rishabh Pant are among the players expected to be nurtured as future Indian captains in the red-ball format. Pujara was also not on the radar, having been dropped for the home series against Sri Lanka in March before returning to the India XI for the one-off game in England, where Pant was Bumrah’s deputy.

It Really Doesn’t Change Much – KL Rahul

In the pre-series press conference on Monday, Rahul gave a strange reaction to the appointment of Cheteshwar Pujara as vice-captain instead of Rishabh Pant for the first Test against Bangladesh. The 30-year-old made it clear that such decisions do not change a player’s responsibility in the team, before admitting that he was unaware of the criteria used to select the vice-captain.

“I at least don’t know what the criteria is, whoever is picked you give yourself a pat on your back. Even for me, when I was named the vice captain, you get happy, you have the responsibility of the team,” he said in the pre-match press conference on Monday in Chattogram.

“It really doesn’t change much, everybody knows their role and responsibility and how much the team appreciates their contribution. Rishabh and Puji both have been brilliant for us, and have done the job so many times. Itna jada sochte nahin hai jo hai (We don’t really think that much), he tries to take the responsibility. We carry on as a team.”

Following the ODI series, India will take on Bangladesh in the first Test of the two-match series at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram on December 14. and the second test is scheduled to be played in Mirpur on December 22.
