Twitter Praises “Generational Talent” Shubman Gill As He Hits His Maiden Test Century vs Bangladesh

The 23-year-old India National Cricket Team star opening batsman Shubman Gill scored his maiden Test century in the first Test of the two-match series against Bangladesh National Cricket Team at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram on Friday, December 16.

In the first innings of the match, the Punjab-born batter Shubman Gill got off to a good start but was unable to register a big score. He was the first one to fall in the first innings on Day 1 as Taijul Islam dismissed him for 20 on the second ball of the 14th over.

On the 5th ball of the 48th over, the 23-year-old opening batsman smashed a four to Mehidy Hasan Miraz to complete his maiden Test century off 147 balls. Notably, Gill had a scare on 70 when Yasir Ali pinged him on the pads. However, the DRS technology was down and Bangladesh were unable to take a review.

Overall, the young opening batsman amassed 110 runs off 152 balls, including 10 fours and 3 sixes, before being cleaned up by Mehidy Hasan Miraz in the 50th over.

Before today, the 23-year-old’s best Test score was 91, which came in a match-winning cause during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21 in the 4th innings of the Brisbane Test against Australia.

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill has become the 34th Indian opener to hit a Test century and only 6th Indian to hit a ton against Bangladesh in the purest format of the game as an opener after Gautam Gambhir, Wasim Jaffer, Dinesh Karthik, Shikhar Dhawan, Murali Vijay, and Mayank Agarwal.
