India’s current skipper Rohit Sharma had a remarkable run during India’s tour of England in 2021, where they played four Tests before pulling out of the series-decider match after the visitor’s camp was hit with Covid-19 cases, which called off the Manchester Test.

Rohit was in sublime touch with the bat in that four Tests, scoring 368 runs in four Tests at 52.57. The Indian opener mustered scores of 36, 12*, 83, 21, 19, 59, 11, and 127. In the Lord’s Test, Rohit had great composure against the England attack and hit 11 fours and a six during his 83 in the first innings, he missed the golden chance to put his name on the Lord’s Honours Boards as he chopped on the stumps in response to James Anderson’s reverse-swinging masterclass delivery.

Rohit Sharma was in a daze on missing a hundred at Lord’s: Ravi Shastri

Ravi Shastri, who was then India’s head coach, mentioned how Rohit was dejected with his dismissal and missing on the hundred. However, Rohit made up for the missed opportunity by notching up his first overseas Test hundred at The Oval in the second innings of the fourth Test.

“When Rohit got out, he came back to the dressing room and just sat quietly on a table. He was in a daze. He just wanted that hundred. A special feeling for any player to get a hundred at Lord’s. And you could see that he was really, really dejected. But he made up for it at The Oval,” Shastri said on air during the 2nd ODI between India and England at Lord’s.

Rohit Sharma missed the fifth rescheduled Test against England

Rohit’s contribution with the bat was an impetus in India’s triumphant victories at Lord’s (won by 151 runs) and The Oval (won by 157 runs). Although Rohit missed the rescheduled fifth Test in Birmingham, still he finished India’s most run-getter in the five-match series.

Rohit tested positive for Covid-19 during India’s warm-up game against Leicestershire and subsequently was ruled out for the one-off Test. The Indian team was led by pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah, in the fifth Test, which they lost by seven wickets as England chased 378 in the fourth innings, their highest chase in a Test match.
