Former England captain Nasser Hussain lauded Rob Key, Ben Stokes, and Brendon McCullum for making an immediate consequence on the Test team.

England hit rock bottom earlier this year after losing successive series to Australia and the West Indies, prompting Joe Root to resign as Test captain.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) decided to try something new by appointing two separate coaches for red and white-ball cricket.

Fans reacted negatively to McCullum’s appointment as Test coach. However, the former New Zealand skipper has suppressed his detractors with 4 successive victories, forming a formidable partnership with team captain Ben Stokes.

Nasser Hussain, writing in his Daily Mail column, expressed surprise at new-look England’s early success:

“These were excellent appointments, but I do not think any of us could have predicted how good it would be this summer or how quickly England would improve.”

Nasser Hussain on Coach Brendon McCullum:

Aside from providing aggression to the team, McCullum has helped set up clarity in the changing room. Stokes has made this a key component of each of their great run chases under Brendon McCullum.

Nasser Hussain thinks England is not over-analyzing as much as it used to, adding:

“McCullum has guaranteed that England will not be intimidated by the game. They are not overthinking or getting anxious about what is ahead of them.”

“They are just tying on their pads or picking up a ball and going out to have fun. They have been doing remind that trying to play for England is indeed a wonderful experience that should not be taken lightly.”

England won the fifth Test at Edgbaston on Tuesday after defeating India by seven wickets and completing a record run chase.
