Wasim Jaffer, a former cricketer, blamed the batting unit for the visitors’ poor performance in the 3rd innings, in which they were bowled out for 245 runs, keeping England in the game.
England defeated India by seven wickets in the fifth and final Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham. In the fourth inning, the hosts chased down a record total of 378 to tie the series at 2-2. India missed out on winning their first series on English soil since 2007.

India entered the delayed fifth and final Test of the series, which they were leading 2-1, with high expectations of securing their first series victory on English soil since 2007. The tourists were expected to finish the job and hoist the Pataudi trophy after two magnificent victories at Lord’s and Oval last year.

However, the hosts easily defeated an enormous total of 378 on the game’s last day, leaving Indian supporters devastated. The in-form Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow each scored hundreds as England crushed the Jasprit Bumrah-led team to win by seven wickets.
‘There was no excuse in the third innings’: Wasim Jaffer
Wasim Jaffer pointed out that India did not capitalize on favorable batting conditions.
“Absolutely (whether batters should be blamed for the loss). The conditions were a little difficult in the first two innings, but there was no excuse in the third. India should have scored 350-400” Wasim Jaffer in an interview with EspnCricinfo.
“Yes, but you also have to give credit to Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow.” It was truly brilliant batsmanship,” Wasim Jaffer added.

With a 132-run lead after the first innings, India had given themselves the best chance of winning. The visitors established a strong platform thanks to the half-centuries of Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant, but they did not fully capitalize on it. Despite a shaky start that saw them fall to 98-5 on the first day, India managed to score a total of 416 in the first innings, with centuries from Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja.
England won the fifth Test at Edgbaston on Tuesday after defeating India by seven wickets and completing a record run chase.
