Former England captain David Gower heaped praise on the England National Cricket Team red-ball captain Ben Stokes and said that he “has a bulletproof approach to cricket”.

Stokes was appointed as England’s Test captain after an awful run of the team under the leadership of Joe Root for an extended period of time. Recently, the Ben Stokes-led England registered a dominant 3-0 Test series win over the World Test Champions New Zealand.

Speaking to TOI, legendary England batter David Gower hailed the captain-coach duo of Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum. He said:

“The combination of McCullum and Stokes has clearly changed something. When McCullum’s appointment was announced, people were wondering what his qualifications were. They are now apparent. He has a gift of getting into people’s heads and making them feel better,” he said.

The 65-year-old said that the moves made by new England Test captain Stokes have been the right ones so far.

“Without taking Joe Root to court, he is a different type of captain to Stokes. Stokes has a bulletproof approach to cricket. He will make mistakes, but so far most of his moves have seemed to be the right ones.”

Idea of playing a couple of games and being rested even when there is nothing wrong, doesn’t make sense – David Gower

Gower further talked about the strategy employed by former captain Joe Root and former head coach Chris Silverwood, where they used to rest players after a couple of games as a part of England’s rotation policy. He said:

“With regards to selection, when we have a world that is heading back to normal, and all your resources are available, then my view is as straight forward as McCullum’s. Pick your best side for each game. This idea of playing a couple of games and being rested even when there is nothing wrong, doesn’t make sense,” he said.

India have suffered a couple of major blows ahead of the rescheduled Test against England as India captain Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of the Test match after failing to recover from Covid-19 and star opening batsman KL Rahul has been ruled out of the match after suffering an injury.

However, David Gower feels that India have a lot of talented players in the team and England should not take India lightly. He asserted:

“If you are England, you will hope to take advantage. But if you look at this Indian squad, there is a lot of talent among the reserves. Look at the way they played in Australia. One should be wary of reserves because they have the talent and the spirit to make the most of it.”

Legendary England batter Gower also opined that India will play only one spinner in the one-off Test against England, which will be Ravindra Jadeja.

“I have a feeling, they will play only Jadeja,” he said.

The 5th and last Test match of the series between India and England, which was cancelled last year due to the Covid-19 scare in the Indian camp, will be played at the Edgbaston, Birmingham from Friday, July 1.
