Former Indian player Rudra Pratap Singh said England will have to display an extraordinary level of cricket to defeat India in the second ODI at Lord’s.

On Tuesday (July 12), the Rohit Sharma-led side thrashed England by 10 wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. A fiery Jasprit Bumrah inspired England’s capitulation for 110 in 25.2 overs.

Jos Buttler & co were left bewildered in the search for answers to Bumrah’s swing and bounce on a day the Indian speedster rattled England’s top order consisting of Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root to muster career-best figures of 6 for 19.

Butler was the only batter who looked confident facing the Indian bowlers and kept finding the gaps for boundaries. However, the England skipper chose to counterattack instead of hanging around at the crease and post a decent target. As a consequence, Buttler pulled away a short ball off Mohammed Shami only to find Suryakumar Yadav at deep backward square leg.

Indian openers Rohit (76*) and Shikhar Dhawan saw the paltry target in 18.4 overs in their unbeaten 114-run stand, which was the pair’s fourth 100-plus stand in six innings at The Oval.

“I think they will win, there were a lot of positives from the last match, they ticked all their boxes. England will have to play extraordinary cricket to beat India,” RP Singh told Cricbuzz.

Shreyas Iyer should make way for Virat Kohli: RP Singh

Kohli sustained a groin injury during the third T20I at Trent Bridge and that forced him out of the first One-Day International match against England at The Oval. There is no confirmation regarding his participation in the Lord’s ODI on Thursday (July 14) with reports suggesting that the senior Indian batter is yet to recover from the injury.

Shreyas Iyer was part of India’s playing XI in the first ODI- perhaps as a replacement for Kohli, however, he did not bat at The Oval.

Shreyas Iyer should make way for Kohli, should he be available. Suryakumar Yadav looks in pretty good touch at the moment and his form should not be disturbed,” RP Singh said.

England and India will play the second ODI match at the Lord’s on Thursday (July 14). The day also marks England’s third anniversary of lifting the 2019 World Cup at the same venue.
