Harbhajan Singh shared his choice of player for India’s stand-in Test captain for upcoming England vs India Fifth Test match at Edgbaston which begins on July 1. He responded to a question asked by the International cricket council (ICC) on Twitter, who wanted to know the fans’ pick for Rohit Sharma’s replacement.

This comes after Rohit Sharma had to go into quarantine after contracting Covid-19 during the recently concluded warmup practice match against Leicestershire in Grace Road, Leicester. Rohit Sharma captained the team in the match but didn’t come out to the field on the final day, and later it was revealed that he had tested positive for Covid-19.

The updated squad did not have any designated vice-captain in it, as KL Rahul’s name was omitted as he is out with injury.

Harbhajan Singh Picks Jasprit Bumrah As India Captain For England Test

India leads 2-1 in the series and needs to win or draw this final Test match to secure their fourth Test series win in England. However, the way England has performed under new captain Ben Stokes and new coach Brendon McCullum in the recent series against New Zealand, whitewashing them 3-0, India missing Rohit Sharma will be a huge setback for the visitors.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India on Monday sent out a release which stated that opening batter Mayank Agarwal has been added to the Indian squad for the upcoming Test match against England as a cover for captain Rohit Sharma.

There has been a lot of discussion amongst the cricket fraternity as to who should captain India in case Rohit misses out. There are options like Virat Kohli, who stepped down as captain in January this year after losing the Test series in South Africa.

Jasprit Bumrah was the Indian vice-captain in the recent Sri Lanka Test series at home and is the prime candidate for the captaincy. Another player who could captain India is Rishabh Pant given that he has captaincy experience.

On Tuesday, the International Cricket Council (ICC) posted a tweet asking fans to name their choice in case Rohit misses the Edgbaston Test. Answering the question, former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh responded to the tweet and tagged India pacer Jasprit Bumrah.

If Bumrah does end up captaining the Indian team, he will become only the second fast bowler to do so after the legend Kapil Dev.
