Sunil Gavaskar, a batting icon, has identified a problem with Virat Kohli’s batting strategy in the Edgbaston Test as the former India skipper seems to have difficulty with the bat.

The postponed fifth Test of the 2021 series was won by England by seven wickets on the fifth and final day as the hosts tied the series 2-2. Virat Kohli scored 11 and 20 runs in the two innings at Edgbaston as England chased 378 in the fourth session.

Since November 2019, the 33-year-old batsman has not recorded an international hundred, and his recent dismal form has been a reason for worry for many Tests.

According to Gavaskar, who was speaking to Sports Today, Kohli is attempting to reach for nearly every ball and play at it just for the lean patch and his desire to get out of it.

“Playing in England requires you to stay on stage as late as you can. The ball is then played once you have given it time to do its task. From what little I could make out in the highlights, it appeared Kohli was attempting to reach for the ball and try to play the ball early” Gavaskar stated

Sunil Gavaskar on unbelievable England batting effort:

Sunil Gavaskar acknowledged that the Indian team management should be concerned by the way England pursued a record total in the fourth innings, similar to how South Africa did against India in a home series last year.

“It is caused for concern, especially with this most recent chase of 378 – it is a tremendous total to chase and the way they accomplished it with so much time to spare on the final day – they got 120 runs in about 100 minutes, that is great batting,” remarked Sunil Gavaskar.

“Perhaps we should have tried different angles, sometimes going over the wicket, other times going around the wicket. Perhaps we should have changed ends when bowling. Maybe not enough of that was tried. The batsmen appeared more committed to remaining at the wicket each time. The opposition was stronger that day, despite our bowlers’ best efforts” Sunil Gavaskar continued.

On Thursday, July 7, India and England will play the first of three Twenty20 International (T20I) matches at Southampton’s Rose Bowl Cricket Ground.
