Former Indian opening batsman Aakash Chopra is doubtful of Shreyas Iyer’s opportunity to play Test cricket at No. 5.

Shreyas Iyer has had an incredible start to his Test career, amassing 368 runs in just four Tests and scoring a century and three fifties. However, Iyer has yet to play a Test away from home.

Aakash Chopra is unsure of whether he possesses the skills and disposition necessary to survive in unstable circumstances. The difficulties Iyer has had with short-pitched bowling are also widely known.
Aakash Chopra discussed the importance of players like Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant stepping up at Edgbaston in a video on his YouTube channel. He stated:

“Shreyas Iyer, playing at No. 5, will make her debut in international conditions. He performed well against New Zealand at home and had a chance to beat South Africa, but he was out of shape. Unfortunately, at No. 5, he does not inspire me with much confidence. Pant has strong at-bats, primarily in the second inning. He must perform well in the first inning as well,” Aakash Chopra said.

Aakash Chopra on India’s chances of making the WTC final again:

Aakash Chopra believes India will have to defeat England in the fifth Test if they want to maintain their chances of placing first and second in the WTC standings. He gave the following explanation for the same:

“India will then play two Test matches in Bangladesh and four at home against Australia following this. As New Zealand demonstrated, it might not be easy to get all potential scores from that home series. Therefore, a victory is essential for India to not only win the series but also attempt to climb the WTC rankings.”

The fifth Test, the one between England and India that has been rescheduled, will start on July 1 at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Due to the COVID-19 fear, the final match of the two teams’ Test series from the previous year was postponed. The Indian team presently has a 2-1 advantage in the series.
