Former Indian pace bowler Zaheer Khan feels either Ishan Kishan or Sanju Samson will play against England in the first T20 International match on Thursday. India is set to take on England in a three-match T20I series after a gruelling Test against the same opposition at Edgbaston early this week.
India have rested Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja for the first T20I match on Thursday as all of them featured in the rescheduled fifth Test.
India to take on England in three T20Is
India levelled the five-match T20I series against South Africa 2-2 at home in June and followed it with a 2-0 win against Ireland as Hardik Pandya led a second-string squad in the two T20Is.
With the absence of Rishabh Pant, the Rohit Sharma-led side has the option of playing Dinesh Karthik, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan as wicketkeeper-batter in the teams. Karthik kept the wickets during the Ireland T20Is with the other two players playing in the team purely as batters.
With 411 runs in 12 innings in 2022, Ishan is the second-highest run-scorer in T20 Internationals overall this year. Samson has been on and off in the Indian team but the selectors are giving him ample of opportunities ahead of the T20 World Cup.
One among Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson will play: Zaheer Khan
Zaheer feels Karthik will play as a finisher in the team and either Ishan Kishan or Sanju Samson will play in the top order for India.
“The preparation for the T20 World Cup should begin now. The conditions in England and Australia are different, so have to keep that in mind as well. When you have such a big squad, it becomes difficult to determine which players should play,” Zaheer said on Cricbuzz.
“I think one among Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson will play. If you wish to play Ruturaj Gaikwad, then they will have to shuffle again. Dinesh Karthik being in the squad as a finisher is an added advantage,” he added.
The first T20I between England and India will be played on Thursday (July 5) at the Rose Bowl in Southampton.
